F1 student - I20 expiring - OPT applied - Query?

I am a PhD student in F1 (exp) visa. My I-20 is exp July 31 %26amp; have applied for OPT w/ a start date of Aug 1. I might get my OPT probably around Aug 15.

I am defending on Aug 3%26amp; will submit dissertation by Aug 7. The deadline for Aug grad has passed so I have to graduate Dec.

My faculty job starts Aug 14 %26amp; they will process H1 for me after few months.

1. Since my I-20 is expiring do I have to get it renewed since I am going to grad in Dec 2008. Or since I have applied for OPT with a start date of Aug 1 its okay.

Acc. to my Univ. international affairs it is okay for I-20 to exp since I am defending in a week %26amp; only pending is hooding ceremony in dec.

2. Do i have to register for Fall 2008 to keep my status or since I applied for OPT I dont have to. I dont want to go out of status %26amp; jeopardize imm status.

Acc. to my univ International affairs %26amp; grad center I dont have to reg for Fall 08 bcoz I will be done w/ everything even before 1st day of classes (aug 27th).

Are they right?|||I don't think you need to worry about it.

don't forget that each person also has a grace period of 60 days after your documents expires.

If you are nervous about the opt, check the status of your case often online and if you don't get any notice(which I doubt would happen) after when you are supposed to get it, check with the international student office to see if you need ot register.
